What is X-Ray Testing?
X-ray testing is one of the most effective non-destructive methods for detecting internal defects in investment castings. This technique involves exposing the casting to X-ray radiation, where materials of varying densities absorb the rays differently, creating contrast on the radiographic film. Dense areas absorb more radiation and appear lighter, while low-density defects—such as porosity, shrinkage, cracks, or inclusions—allow more radiation to pass through and show up as darker areas.
This method reliably reveals internal discontinuities like gas porosity, dendritic or filamentary shrinkage, and cracks, making it critical for ensuring the safety and functionality of castings in their final applications.

Advantages of X-Ray Testing
Clear Defect Imaging
X-ray testing offers a direct visual representation of internal flaws, making it easier to identify cracks, shrinkage, and porosity.
Long-Term Records
Radiographic films or digital scans can be archived for future review, supporting quality tracking and product traceability.
High Detection Sensitivity
Especially effective for thin-walled castings, X-rays can detect small, hidden defects that might be missed by other NDT methods.
Low Surface Requirements
Testing results are not heavily influenced by surface finish, reducing the need for extensive pre-inspection preparation.
Material Versatility
This method works reliably on various casting materials, such as stainless steel, carbon steel, and non-ferrous alloys.
Prevents Costly Failures
By detecting internal discontinuities early, X-ray testing helps avoid product failure, saving time and downstream repair costs.
